Shifter tattoo artist fights an ancient evil god in Savannah, GA. From that set-up alone, I wanted to like the novel, but there was too much trash mixed in for this to be an enjoyable read.First of all, Katie, the main character, is dumb. Not that she's written as dumb, she's written as a seemingly normal person who just keeps doing stupid things and that's frustrating. After months of nightmares about a very specific tattoo, a guy walks into her store and requests . . . the specific and unique tattoo she's been seeing in her nightmares. So what does she do? Immediately inks it on him. Even after local supernatural experts warn her that doing the next tattoo will lead to catastrophic consequences, she doesn't really seem to take it as seriously as she should. It isn't that the world of magic and the supernatural is foreign to her and she doesn't believe them -- she's a shifter herself. She just doesn't really seem to care about something that would be a really big deal to the average person.The second issue with the book is the treatment of Sugar, Katie's friend. Sugar is a transgender woman, but the author seems determined to portray her in a demeaning way. Katie thinks of her as a "man in a dress," cattily calls attention to the ways Sugar isn't passing, and generally is just determined to make us view Sugar as some kind of freak. She's an interesting character who deserves more from the author. The cover screams Urban Fantasy.The writing is solid enough and there weren't any grammatical mistakes.But I gave this two stars because the action and plot were a little underwhelming. But mostly, it's the action.The main character starts off digging a grave, then getting frustrated. All of a sudden, the dead body in the grave wakes up. Aaaand...That was a dream. So the beginning threw me off a little. It felt a little cliched. I was led to believe the main character was doing something interesting, and then I read about her mundane life. So far, meh, so I thought I'd keep reading.The main character turns out to be a tattoo artist, and she shows her associates the dragon tattoo on her back. Apparently she's half dragon, half human, or something like that. I believe the author mentioned something about the dragon attacking some bad guys? That would have been more interesting than showing the dragon to an ordinary man.Then she goes to work in her tattoo shop, and everybody central to the plot walks in. Fair enough. Then the human with a spirit in him walks in and wants a tattoo, and she obliges.Then someone comes in, some things happen, and they have to go and meet the grandmother of the human who knows about her dragon tattoo.It all felt a little underwhelming. I would have liked to see some action, some fight scenes, or at least some transformation scenes. I wanted the stakes to be raised, but 13% in, it's all talk, and maybe some mystery, but still talk. I couldn't finish this book.
